In our poor county I'm sorry for to say, That hunger and starvation are increasing everyday, For want of food and coals we know not what to do, But with your kind assistance we'll see the battle through. I need not say the reason why we've been brought so low, The masters have behaved unkind as everyone will know, We won't lay down and let them treat us as they like, To punish us they've stopped the pits and caused the present strike. Pulley wheel has ceased to move that once went swift around, Horses and the ponies too been brought from underground, They took our work from us, they care not if we die, For they can eat the best of food and drink the best when dry. Miner and his poor wife each morning have to roam, To seek for bread to feed the hungry ones at home, Flour barrel is empty now, our true and faithful friend, Which makes the thousands wish today the strike was at an end. So let the stand or let them lie, do with them as you choose, To give them fourteen and a half we ever shall refuse, They're always willing to receive but not inclined to give, And very soon they won't allow a working man to live.

Come all your loyal heroes wherever you may be, Don't hire with any master until you know what your work will be, For you must rise up early from clear daylight til dawn, And I'm afraid you'll ne'er be able to plow them rocks of Bawn. Rise up you lovely Sweeney and give your horse some hay, Give him some oats to feed on before you go away, Don't feed him on soft turnip, put him out on your green lawn, Or I'm afraid you'll ne'er be able to plow them rocks of Bawn. My curse attend you Sweeney you have me nearly robbed, Your sitting by the fireside with your dúidín in your gob, Your sitting by the fireside from clear daylight til dawn, And I'm afraid you'll ne'er be able to plow them rocks of Bawn. My shoes they are worn out my stockings they are thin, My heart is always trembling for fear they might give in, My heart is always trembling from clear daylight til dawn, And I'm afraid I'll ne'er be able to plow them rocks of Bawn. I wish the queen of England would send for me in time, And put me in some regiment all in my youth and prime, I'd fight for Irelands glory from clear daylight til dawn, And I swear I'd ne'er return again to plow them rocks of Bawn.

Have you heard the news of late about those mighty men so great, I mean the swells of Fishergate, the cotton lords of Preston. They're a set of stingy blades they locked up all their mills and shades, But with our ballads we've come up to tramp the country roundabout. We asked them for more pay, they had the impudence to say, To your demands we'll not consent you get enough to be content. Our masters say they're very sure that a strike you can't endure, But we'll not be content til we get our ten per cent. They're making money every way, building factories everyday, But we will have our ten per cent from the cotton lords of Preston. Everybody's crying shame on these gentlemen by name, Don't you think they're much to blame, the cotton lords of Preson.

I’m desolate and weary, On this island all alone; On the island of Jura. I long for to see my self home. On the island of Jura, I long for to go home, for I’m without sister or brother, Without father or mother, hai o I’m without sister or brother, Without father or mother, I’ve no-one at all who can, Heed my all my woes and sorrow. I’ve no-one at all who can, Heed my sorrows, Through the harshest of narrows, A broad ship there sails, hai o Through the harshest of narrows, A broad ship there sails, Aboard is my true love, I wish they’d return each morrow. Aboard is my true love, Wish they’d return each morning, And with me see through, All of our islands, hai o
